IMPORTANT TEMPORARY UPDATE to Walk 5 - Worcester to Pershore. Extensive work being undertaken at Diglis Canal Basin has resulted in the closure of the towpath between there and the Commandery, reportedly until mid June 2006. However, it seems likely that this deadline has been met. This affects the route from Worcester Shrub Hill station as described on page 26 of the book. Follow the original route as far as the Commandery. Here, it is necessary to leave the canal. Cross the road and proceed straight on along Commandery Road, with the canal below you on your right. Fork right at the Albion P.H. into Diglis Road. Eventually, you will reach the Anchor public house. After this, it should have been possible to rejoin the original route at Diglis Basin through the works site. However, it has now been discovered that the riverside footpath from the Canal Lock towards the River Lock is also closed. It is suggested that you carry straight on along Diglis Road until you reach a sharp right hand bend. Cross the road and enter a park via the remains of a stile. Cross diagonally right, aiming for a red dog-litter bin. Here, you can either leave (right) and proceed through a business park to Diglis River Lock, or you can continue straight on, where a track leads to the river bank about 150 metres south of the lock - keep following the business park boundary fence on your right. When you reach the river path, turn left and you are back on the official route. For those starting at Foregate Street station, there is also a change of route. Proceed as shown until you reach the canal lock. The footpath ahead is closed. Turn left and proceed through Diglis Canal Basin, using a fenced off route through the works. When you reach the road at the Anchor public house, turn right and follow the route shown above. Updated 22nd June 2006. |
