WOOD PIGEON DISABLES ADELANTE.

Among the usual list of explanations for delays to trains on the Cotswold Line, you would not expect to find "Wood Pigeon".

On Friday 2nd November 2007, the 0952 First Great Western Adelante from London Paddington to Hereford was completely disabled when it hit a wood pigeon on the approach to Charlbury station.  An inspection of the train at Charlbury revealed that the air system which is required to allow the brakes to be released was leaking badly.  The train could proceed no further and blocked the single line at Charlbury for 2 hours, before an engineer isolated the brakes so that the stock could return empty to Oxford sidings.

This caused considerable disruption to other trains on the line.  The 1023 from Worcester FS to London was delayed by 129 minutes at the end of the single line at Ascott-u-Wychwood and it is believed that the following 1125 from Worcester SH to London was delayed for a lengthy period at Moreton-in-Marsh.  In the opposite direction, the 1052 from Paddington to Worcester FS terminated at Oxford and the 1152 Paddington to Hereford was delayed in the Oxford area by some 40 minutes waiting for access to the single line, with the effect that it terminated at Great Malvern.

The termination of the 0952 at Charlbury and the 1052 at Oxford meant that there was no train available at Worcester FS for the 1321 to London and at Hereford for the 1325 to London, so both of these trains were cancelled until Oxford.
